Inter-state gang busted, 5 pistols seized

The Sulibele police busted an inter-state gang and recovered five pistols and live rounds of ammunitions on Saturday. Interrogation revealed that the gang was involved in several robberies in the City.

The police busted the gang while investigating the robbery of an accountant working for a private company. They came across Prem Kumar who sold country made pistols. Kumar also worked as a middleman to supply labourers from Odisha and Jharkhand, the police said.

A few plainclothesmen posed as clients who wanted to buy a pistol and lured Kumar into a trap. He agreed to sell them a gun for Rs 20,000 and fixed a place for the exchange. When he came there with the weapon, the police nabbed him red-handed.

Based on the information provided by Kumar, Narayana Swamy was arrested from Pillugumpa Industrial Area. Four country-made pistols and live ammunitions were seized from him, said the police. During the interrogation, the duo confessed to several robberies. They were also behind an incident in which an accountant was robbed of Rs 4.8 lakh by firing at him thrice.

A senior police officer said, “The duo would study their victim’s movements. Then they would chalk out a plan and summon Hampa Marandi and his two associates, Sajjan and Madhava Parban, from Jharkhand. Marandi, along with his associates, would arrive in the City by train, execute the work assigned to them and leave the City immediately with their share of the money.

“The gang used a similar modus operandi to commit crimes on the outskirts of the City. They are being interrogated to find the other cases they were involved in.”
