Nine people suffered injuries when members of two families locked horns over a wedding issue on Saturday morning at Chinnasandra in Kadugodi area.

All the nine were shifted to Victoria Hospital for treatment. They are said to be out of danger.

The injured included a woman, the complainant; her brothers Manoj and Sandeep; her father Peddareddappa, his brother Chikkapa and Chikkareddappa.

According to the police, Sunil, a resident of Chinnasandra, fell in love with a girl, a resident of Varthur, seven years ago. They worked in the same office in Koramangala. Sunil had a physical relationship with the girl and she became pregnant. However, he started avoiding her after he came to know she was in the family way, said the police.

The girl delivered a baby in October last year and Sunil rejected the girl’s offer to marry her. His parents claimed that they were looking for a wedding alliance for their son. The girl’s parents lodged a complaint of cheating and rape against Sunil with the Varthur police. However, he managed to obtain anticipatory bail from a court on January 10, said the police.

The victim’s brother Manoj told Deccan Herald: “Sunil’s parents sent us a message through a common friend inviting us for talks at their house to finalise the wedding procedures and we went there. Soon after we reached their house, they started attacking us with sticks and weapons. My father and his brother have suffered major injuries and doctors have advised surgery for my father, who has suffered head injury.”

“After obtaining bail, Sunil would often call up my sister expressing his willingness to marry her, but his parents were opposing it. He claimed he was facing financial problems and demanded Rs 22,000. In fact, my sister believed him and deposited the money in his account,” Manoj said.

The victim stated that both families knew about their affair. “He would often take me to his house whenever there were festivities and rituals. Hence, I was under the impression that Sunil’s parents would approve our wedding. Meanwhile, my mother passed away six moths ago. We did not rake up the wedding issue as we were not in a position to conduct any rituals for six months due to my mother’s demise. However, Sunil’s parents only invited us for talks and attacked my family members,” she stated in her complaint.
Sunil’s parents refused to comment on the incident.
