The government has decided to do away with the contract system for pourakarmikas and a decision in this regard will be announced by month end, said, Narayan, Chairperson, State Commission for Safai Karmacharis.
He said this at a programme here on Thursday. Once the contract system is abolished, civic workers would take home Rs 14,000 a month (Rs 9,000 salary, Rs 3,000 risk allowance and Rs 2,000 health allowance). The amount will be paid directly to the workers by the city corporations and not contractors.
On manual scavenging, he said, “Commission has decided to give a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the kin of all pourakarmikas who have died while on duty. An additional Rs 5 lakh will be given if the pourakarmika are SC/STs ,”
