Bring legislation to regularise illegal layouts, says BJP

Last Updated 11 May 2015, 19:21 IST

Demanding the government to stop the ongoing demolition drive in the City, a delegation led by BJP MLA Suresh Kumar appealed to Revenue Minister V Srinivas Prasad to bring about a legislation to regularise illegal layouts.

The delegation said that the government, on the pretext of clearing encroachments, was victimising the poor and middle class residents. It also said that it was alarming that despite Bengaluru deputy commissioner giving an assurance that residents would not be evicted, the authorities had continued with the drive, rendering more families homeless.

Leaders in the delegation said as many as 16 layouts were illegally created on lake beds by the BDA, and the property owners were being made to pay a price for no fault of theirs.

Classify lakes
The delegation suggested that the lakes should be classified under the following categories -- living lakes, dead lakes, and lakes that can be restored. If need be, the government can convene a special session to discuss the matter, they said.

In response, Prasad said that the government would ensure the wellbeing of the affected, and that a rehabilitation package was being worked out.

BJP legislators Jagadish Kumar, Ashwathnarayan, and former corporator Govindraj, were part of the delegation.
