Even a day after the Karnataka High Court’s acquittal of AIADMK supremo J Jayalalitha from the assets case, which could bring her the chief minister’s post, there was no official announcement from the party headquarters as to when the much awaited swearing-in ceremony would be held.

However, party sources said that the AIADMK chief is likely to take oath on May 17, which is a new moon day (Amavasaya), an auspicious day. “Since today (Tuesday) is ‘Navami’ (considered inauspicious day), our leader will take oath on  Sunday at Raj Bhavan,” a senior AIADMK party functionary said.

He said before swearing-in ceremony, the ruling MLAs will meet the governor and submit a copy of the resolution after which he would invite Jayalalitha to form the new government along with her new council of ministers.

“Party meeting is likely to be held by Wednesday or day after to elect our ‘Amma’ as the legislators party leader,” he said.

Government officials have already started decorating the state secretariat where the Assembly session is expected to start soon after Jayalalitha takes the seat of power. “We were asked to renovate certain areas of the Assembly hall and chief minister’s office,” a senior government official said.

Meanwhile, the current Chief Minister O Panneerselvam is expected to tender his resignation shortly.

With court verdict in her favour, Jayalalitha can become the chief minister again and  needs to get elected to the Assembly within six months. There were also strong rumours about the possibility of the AIADMK government opting for a snap polls to cash in on the euphoria over the positive court verdict.
