Police have arrested a man who, along with his elder brother, broke into the flat of his employer in Electronics City and made off with Rs 76 lakh worth of gold and diamond jewellery.

Police gave their names as Janardhan, 28, and his younger brother Shivaprasad, 26. While Shivaprasad was working as chauffeur to Venkataramana Reddy, a resident of Concorde Midway City, an apartment complex in Electronics City, Janardhan was employed in the same position by a different family in the very apartment complex. The brothers from Rayachoti, Andhra Pradesh.

According to the police, on March 15, 2015, the brothers broke into the house of Reddy, who runs a diagnostic centre in Hosur, and made away with 884 grams of gold and 295 grams of diamond ornaments, all valued at Rs 76 lakh. Reddy and his family were away in Hosur at the time. The  burglary came to light three days later when the inhabitants returned home only to find the cupboard broken and the ornaments missing.

Shivaprasad accompanied Reddy to the Electronics City police station to make a complaint. Police examined the footage of the CCTV camera installed at the flat but didn’t get any clues. Out of suspicion, they questioned Shivaprasad who didn’t take long to spill the beans.
According to the police, Shivaprasad confessed that he and his brother stole the valuables after entering the house using a duplicate key.

A senior police officer said breaking into the house was Shivaprasad’s idea. “He had been closely observing Reddy’s movements and was certain that a lot of valuables had been kept in the house. A few months ago, Reddy left the house keys in the car and Shivaprasad was clever enough to make their duplicate. As soon as Reddy and his family went to Hosur, Shivaprasad and Janardhan grabbed the chance and struck at the house,” the officer said.
Thereafter, the brothers took the valuables to Rayachoti and pawned around 180 grams jewellery.

They spent the money on high-end mobile phones, LED television sets and other costly gadgets. “We have recovered not only the pawned valuables but also the other ornaments stashed in the utility box of  Shivaprasad’s bike,” the officer added.
