A marathon search operation by the Police, Forest and Fire personnel and local swimmers to trace the bodies of two sisters, who were washed away in Arkavathi river at Chunchi Falls in Kanakapura taluk of Ramanagara district two days ago, yielded partial results as the body of one of the dead was recovered on Tuesday.

“We were able to recover the body of Shalini, but failed to trace Malini’s body. We will resume the search operation on Wednesday,” a police officer said. Infact, it was Raju, Shalini’s father, who traced the body beneath a heap of garbage near a power generation unit, the officer added. The forces began the search operation from 7 am and continued till noon. Raju went on his own and noticed foul smell near the power generation unit and began in a heap of garbage. As other forces joined him, they traced the body and Raju established his daughter’s identity.

The body was taken to Kanakapura government hospital for post mortem. Malini, 22, and Shalini, 20, both residents of Ittamadu, were among a team of seven members that had gone for an outing on Sunday afternoon. Flash floods washed all seven of them after water from the dam constructed across Arkavathi river at Harobele, was released. All the seven were sitting on two separate rocks in the river, clicking pictures. The two sisters were washed away, while five others were rescued late on Sunday night.
