A car driver allegedly rammed into a 37-year-old Delhi Police head constable when he was signaled to stop at a picket in east Delhi’s New Ashok Nagar on Monday.

On impact, head constable Yogesh Kumar landed on the car’s bonnet and was driven for around 200 metre. The driver has been arrested, police said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred when Yogesh was on duty with constables Narendra and Amarpal. They are posted with New Ashok Nagar police station and were deployed at a picket near Delhi-Noida Sector 10 border.

“The police team had tried to stop a Maruti 800 car coming from Noida around 1 pm. The vehicle had tinted glasses which is banned in the capital.

The car driver had initially slowed down, but suddenly accelerated and tried to flee,” said a police officer.

The car hit Yogesh, who fell on the bonnet as the driver sped away. The accused stopped the car only after dragging the policeman for around 200 metre. “Yogesh escaped unhurt,” the officer added.

The driver was arrested and identified as 24-year-old Nitin Mohan Lal, a resident of Noida Sector 26. After hitting Yogesh, Nitin had taken a U-turn towards Noida. He was, however, forced to stop the car on being chased by a police control room van.

A case has been registered over Yogesh’s statement with New Ashok Nagar police station.
Nitin faces charges of rash driving and obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions under sections of the Indian Penal Code. Yogesh hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district.

In a similar incident, a traffic police sub-inspector was also dragged on a car’s bonnet by a cabbie in south Delhi’s Saket in January.

The driver had initially escaped after leaving the car at a nearby market. After registering a case, police had traced the car owner and arrested the driver at his house.
