A 74-year-old man was found strangled at his house after a heated argument with his tenant in north-east Delhi’s Mansarovar Park on Monday. His room was also ransacked, while the tenant is absconding, police said.

Victim Ratan Singh lived with his wife and the family of his nephew. Police said he was found dead by his nephew’s wife Anju.

“Anju had found the main door of the house open when she woke up in the wee hours of Monday. She raised an alarm and went to Ratan’s room, where he was found dead on the bed,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) Veenu Bansal.
In her statement, Anju told police that she suspects the involvement of Ratan’s tenant Manoj. The house has three rooms and two kitchens shared by Ratan’s family, Anju’s family and Manoj.

It is also alleged that Manoj was involved in a heated argument with Ratan around 9.30 pm on Sunday.

“During the argument, Manoj had also threatened to kill Ratan. Manoj is currently absconding,” another police officer added.

Anju said Ratan had told Manoj to not bring guests to his room. However, Manoj regularly brought his friends to the house for dinner.

He came home with another friend on Sunday evening which led to the argument with Ratan.

A case of murder has been filed over Anju’s statement with Mansarovar Park police station.

Ratan’s wife Padma and Anju’s husband Ravinder were not at the house on Sunday evening.

Padma had left home on Sunday morning to attend her nephew’s wedding in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district.

Ravinder was undergoing treatment for tongue cancer in Madhya Pradesh.
“Ravinder had left home on May 20 to get his medicines in Gwalior,” the officer said.
Anju saw Ratan dead around 12.30 am and called Ravinder to inform him. He advised her to call police and also inform their neighbour Prashant.

A police team inspected the house and took Ratan’s body for a post-mortem at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.

“Ratan had several injury marks on his body,” the officer added.
