Cops solve four cases with arrest of bogus policeman

An alleged criminal who used to pose as a police officer to cheat people in the capital and other states has been arrested along with an accomplice.

The arrested kingpin of the gang, identified as 27-year-old Tabrez, was wanted for around 50 such cases registered against him in Delhi, NCR and Maharashtra. His arrest has led to the solving of four cases registered in south Delhi police stations.

Police said Tabrez and his gang mainly targeted women. They used to show their forged identity cards and advice them to wrap their jewellery in a paper as a precautionary measure to avoid becoming a victim of chain snatching.

“As soon as a woman would remove her jewellery and begin wrapping them in a paper, Tabrez would trick her into handing it over to him on the pretext of showing her how to wrap them properly,” said police.

While Tabrez’s accomplices would keep the woman busy, he would swap her belongings with artificial jewellery. They would return the packet to the woman after that and advice her to keep it in her bag and open it only upon reaching home.

“The cheats would flee the spot with original jewellery. The victims would find themselves cheated only upon reaching home and opening the packet,” the officer said, adding one such case was recently reported with the Malviya Nagar police station.
