Four members of a family died instantly when their car crashed into the median strip, veered sharply to the other side of the road and collided head-on with another car coming from the opposite direction.

The accident occurred near Basavanapura in Ramanagar district on Wednesday evening, police said. Police gave their names as Mahadevaiah, 45, who worked for a private company, his wife Meenakumari, 42, an attendant at a government office, and their sons Madhu, 22, and Sathish, 20. They were residents of Ramanagar town.

The family were on their way to Bengaluru. Around 6.30 pm, Mahadevaiah, who was driving the Maruti 800, lost control over the vehicle and crashed it into the median. As the car was at a top speed, it skidded to the other side of the road and collided head-on with a Maruti Swift coming from the opposite direction.

With both cars being driven at high speed, the collision turned out to be catastrophic. Both the vehicles were completely damaged and all four occupants of Maruti 800 were killed on the spot. The two persons in Maruti Swift escaped with minor injuries as passersby rescued them in the nick of time. Police said they were yet to identify them. According to police, members of the public notified them about the accident. A senior officer said traffic on the road came to a grinding halt and could not be streamlined until after over an hour. “It’s an unfortunate incident that took place due to reckless driving,” he added.

A case has been registered at the Ramanagar traffic police station.
