V Madhu, principal secretary of Infrastructure Development Department in his letter (May 12, 2009) to Marcel Hungerbuehier, CEO of BIAL, had asked the BIAL to ensure that all commercial establishments in the airport should have name boards in Kannada, along with English.

Not followed

Yeddyurappa, after inaugurating the three-day training on ‘Kannada in administration’ for officers, said that the Government’s directive had not been followed by the airport
authority.

“It is very sad that even several months after the letter was sent, the authority had not implemented it. Air passengers should have access to Kannada newspapers in the flight as well as airport,” he said.

The CM said several similar orders and circulars issued by the Government on implementing Kannada at all levels of the administration had not been implemented effectively.

All shops and establishments in the State should have name boards in Kannada along with other languages. He told officers that the Government would not tolerate lackadaisical approach towards implementing the Government’s orders in future.

Mukhyamantri Chandru, chairman of Kannada Development Authority, said that of 6.25 lakh State government employees, nearly 1.5 lakh required training in use of Kannada.

The authority, in association with Hampi University had brought out four books which would help officers in using Kannada in day-to-day affairs, effectively.

He also appealed to the CM to take strict action against officers who issue orders and circulars in English.
