The State Election Commission has directed all deputy commissioners to complete the process of finalising reservation for the post of president and vice-president in gram panchayats by June 18.

The SEC had earlier directed the deputy commissioners to complete the process by June 15. However, several DCs had sought more time.

Accordingly, districts which have nine to 11 taluks have been given time till June 18 to finalise the reservation list. Districts which have seven to eight taluks have been given time till June 17 to complete the process, while the deadline for districts which have six or less taluks remains June 15. According to a recent amendment to the Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Act, panchayat presidents and vice-presidents will have a term of five years. Hitherto their tenure was 30 months. Elections to gram panchayats were held in two phases across the State on May 29 and June 2. Counting of votes was taken up on June 5. According to a press release from SEC, results for 85,173 seats in 5,834 GPs have been declared.

The results of 10 seats pertaining to Yelemala and PG Palya gram panchayats in Chamarajanagar will be first submitted to the Karnataka High court as per the court’s direction and then made public
