A man who had escaped after committing a robbery was nabbed after he and his accomplices found the gates of railway tracks in outer Delhi locked for the passage of a train.

The incident took place in Kanjhawala during the early hours of Monday.

Constables Rajesh and Jai Bhagwan were posted in a PCR van when they received information at 2:36 am about a truck driver being robbed. The policemen rushed to the crime spot and met victim Dilshad, who told them he and his helper Iqbal were headed to Bahadurgarh from Shamli.

As they neared a bus stop in Kanjhawala, their vehicle was intercepted by an Eeco van. “Three men armed with knives and iron rods emerged from the van and pulled out the occupants of the truck. They robbed Dilshad of his mobile phone and Rs 2,500 in cash. They also took Rs 2,700 from Iqbal,” said the police.

The robbers then drove away in their van.

Dilshad then called the police control room to inform them about the robbery.
Having learnt about the direction in which the robbers had fled, the constables chased them in their PCR van.

The robbers, however, had to stop at a stretch of railway tracks, which they could not cross as the gates had closed to allow a train to pass.

This forced them to take a U-turn on the wrong carriageway. The PCR van kept pursued them on the same lane.

The robbers were finally intercepted after a 1-km chase, said the police.

However, two of them managed to jump out of the vehicle and flee. The third, 28-year-old Mahender, was chased on foot and overpowered by the policemen.

The local police station was then informed. Mahender and the Eeco van were handed over to them, and a case was registered.

A hunt is on for Mahender’s accomplices, said the police.
