'Drunk' driver tries to run over lawyer in CP

Last Updated 25 June 2015, 04:21 IST

A lawyer barely managed to escape from being crushed to death by the ‘drunk’ driver of an SUV in road rage on the middle circle of central Delhi’s Connaught Place last week.

J K Bhola jumped on the bonnet of the SUV and caught hold of the windshield wiper before falling on the road, police said on Wednesday.

Bhola, a resident of Surya Nagar in Ghaziabad, is a lawyer with Patiala House Court.
Police said the incident occurred when Bhola was returning home at 10.30 pm on June 19. He was driving a Toyota Innova SUV.

“Bhola was at an intersection near PVR Plaza when his SUV was hit by a white SUV coming from outer circle of Connaught Place,” said a police officer.

Bhola claimed that the other SUV was being driven in a rash and negligent manner. It hit Bhola’s SUV on the right side. He, however, was not sure about the model of the car and suspected it to be either a Toyota Innova or Toyota Fortuner.

The SUV’s door on Bhola’s side was stuck due to the damage caused in the accident.
So he came out of the door on the passenger’s side. Bhola alleged that as he went towards the errant driver, the man tried to run over him.

“In the process, I fell on the bonnet of the SUV and the driver drove me up to intersection of radial road number three where he jerked me off the vehicle,” Bhola stated in his complaint to police.

The driver did not stop and fled towards Panchkuian Road. Bhola remembers a part of the SUV’s registration number as DL C 6665.

He later made a PCR call and was taken to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for first aid treatment.

A case under sections 279 (rash driving), 323 (causing hurt) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code has been filed with Connaught Place police station.

On being questioned, Bhola claimed that the driver of the other SUV was driving in an inebriated condition.

“The driver of the offending vehicle was drunk and for that reason, he tried to run over me and carried out the accident,” Bhola added.

Police have analysed CCTV footage to identify the SUV and the errant driver, but no arrest has been made so far.
