An agricultural labourer with his wife and two daughters attempted suicide by consuming pesticide in Chinakurali village of Pandavapura taluk on Sunday. While the wife died in the suicide pact, her husband is battling for life at KR Hospital in Mysuru.

Dinesh (34) is said to have borrowed money from private persons and he was finding it difficult to meet the ends with the earnings from his coolie work. Meanwhile, his creditors were putting pressure on him to repay their money and it is said that debt burden might have compelled Dinesh to take the extreme step. Dinesh and his wife Shwetha consumed food laced with pesticide and fed their daughters Spandana (5) and Monika (3) too.

All the four took ill and were lying on the floor in their house. Bhagyamma, the mother of Dinesh happened to come to the house and with the help of neighbours she shifted all the four to the local primary health centre. They were later shifted to KR Hospital in Mysuru. Shwetha did not respond to treatment and died at the hospital while Dinesh is said to be critical. The two children are stated to be out of danger.

Mysuru Superintendent of Police Dr M N Ajay Nagabhushan visited the hospital. Chinakurali police have registered a case.
