Principal City Civil and Sessions judge Narendra Kumar Basavaraj Gunaki was on Saturday appointed the new registrar of Lokayukta.

The Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) sent an official communique to the Lokayukta office in this regard. Sources said Gunaki is likely to take charge on Monday. Since last three years the Lokayukta institution has had retired judges as  registrar.

Narendra Gunaki's name was cleared by the committee headed by acting Chief Justice of High Court Subhro Kamal Mukherjee. Gunaki is the senior most district judge and has been the Principal City Civil and Sessions judge since January 2015. It may be recalled that during former Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde's tenure, Judge Moosa Kunhi Nayarmoole was the registrar. However, later retired judges Yoginath and H R Deshpande became registrars. Deshpande resigned from the post on July 17 amidst the extortion controversy confronting the  institution.

Suspended

In a related development, the DPAR on Saturday also issued orders placing Joint Commissioner (PRO) Syed Riyaz under suspension. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) had arrested Riyaz in connection with the corruption and extortion racket on July 26 from a private clinic in Koramangala in the City. The SIT had communicated to the Lokayukta office about Riyaz's arrest and forwarded it to the state government for further disciplinary action.
