A Cycle Day was organised on Sunday at Yelahanka Old Town in memory of former president, the late APJ Abdul Kalam.
Prior to the event, the participants observed two-minute silence as a mark of respect for the departed soul. Few of them had gathered at the Kendriya Vihar Apartment, where Kalam stayed during his early days.
More than 2,000 people including the residents of Yelahanka, NSS students from Seshadripuram College and children took part in the event organised by Yelahanka United Environment Association (YUVA) in association with various government departments and non-governmental organisations. The rally waded through Yelahanka old town and around the 350-acre Yelahanka lake.
Manjula, a resident, said that cycling around the lake was a great initiative as it would help in creating awareness on reviving the waterbody with community participation.
The organisers said that the objective of the Cycle Day was to raise awareness on the positive aspects of cycling and promote cycling not just as a recreational activity, but also as a proper transport mode.
