Eminent painter Sunil Das passes away

Eminent painter Sunil Das, awarded Padma Shri in 2004, passed away today following a cardiac arrest, family sources said.

He was 76 and is survived by his wife. Das had a cardiac arrest in the wee hours and was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared brought dead, his family said.

Regarded as one of India's most important post-modern expressionist painters, he was born in 1939 and remained active till his last days.

Born in 1939, he was a student of the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata. A founder-member of the Society of Contemporary Artists, he was famous for his works on horses and bulls.

Besides having been featured in several exhibitions, his works are also a part of the collections of renowned museums such as the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, the Glenbarra Art Museum, Japan, and the Ludwig Museum, Germany.
