Solid waste management: Mandya CMC approves Rs 1.15-cr action plan

A City Municipal Council (CMC) meeting, held here on Wednesday, approved an action plan estimated to cost Rs 1.15 crore for solid waste management and various programmes for the benefit of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities.

CMC Commissioner Shashikumar, who addressed the meeting, expressed happiness over Mandya getting the 6th slot in the list of clean cities.

He thanked the pou-rakarmikas (Civic workers) and said that they are responsible for this feat. He added that they will be taken on a two-day tour and a programme will be organised to felicitated them. 

The councillors took the opportunity to highlight the problems faced by the pourakarmikas and suggested the civic body to give them bonus and other benefits.

The action plan was approved after the officials explained that the tender process for a solid waste management plant has been finalised.

Shashikumar said the action plan has been prepared as per the new circular issued by the government.

Accordingly, SC/ST beneficiaries will get a financial assistance of Rs 2.5 lakh for purchase of a site, Rs 1 lakh for construction of pucca house, Rs 20,000 for repair of roof and medical expenses for those who require surgical treatment, Shashikumar said.

Railway underpass
Discussion on the construction of railway underpass was held based on the blue print sent to the City Municipal Council by the Railway Department. The councillors discussed the pros and cons of the issue and gave their suggestions. Finally, it was decided to conduct a spot inspection, before taking a final decision in this regard.
