Include Kadur in drought-hit taluk list, demands MLA Datta

Last Updated 17 August 2015, 18:18 IST

The officials have failed to furnish details of drought situation in Kadur taluk. The State government which is neglecting the taluk, has failed to include it in the list of drought-hit taluks, said MLA Y S V Datta.

Taking out a padayatra from Kadur to Chikkamagalur on Monday, Datta urged the government to include the taluk in the drought-hit list.

He said Kadur had received good pre-monsoon showers. However, it has failed to receive monsoon showers. As a result, the seeds sown have failed to sprout. The officials have only mentioned the amount of rain received by the taluk and not the reality. The Kadur tahsildar has submitted a report in this regerd to deputy commissioner who in turn has submitted it to the State government.

The legislator said Kadur has been reeling under drought-like situation for the last three years.” The Congress legislators have not impressed upon the State government to include the taluk in the drought-hit list. To impress upon the State government on the ground realities in Kadur, I am organising the padayatra. There is no politics involved in it,” he added.

Memorandum by Cong
Former legislator K B Mallikarjuna said that there was drought-like situation in Kadur. People were struggling to get a pot of water while farmers are in distress owing to scanty rainfall. The State government should include Kadur in the list of drought-hit taluks, he added.

Speaking after submitting a memorandum to Kadur Tahsildar, he said “Permanent irrigation projects have not been implemented in a plateau region like Kadur. With scanty rainfall, the farmers will lose the crops. There is shortage of fodder for cattle. Fodder bank should be opened in the taluk.”

Silence criticised
Zilla Panchayat former president K M Kemparaju accused the local legislator of failing to highlight the plight of Kadur taluk to the State government.

Apart from this, Taluk Bar Association members stayed away from court proceedings and submitted a memorandum to include Kadur in the list of drought-hit taluks.
