Boy battling for life

Last Updated 19 August 2015, 04:24 IST

With their fingers crossed, the kin of the two teenagers battling for their lives after being knocked down by a speeding bus, maintained constant watch outside their hospital ward and kept praying for their recovery, which seemed tough with each passing minute.

Mohd Akram, father of 19-year-old Mauzzam, said the teenager has slipped into coma. “We want him to survive at any cost,” he said.

“He was brought to Hindu Rao Hospital from the accident spot, and from there referred to Sushrut Trauma Centre. He is under coma and has multiple head injuries,” said Akram.
Mauzzam and Mohd Abid were going to a park on their scooty when a cluster service bus coming in speed hit them near Inderlok Metro station. Almost all members of Mauzzam’s family had converged at the Trauma Centre, waiting anxiously for a miracle to happen. Akram said his wife did not come as she was unable to see her son in this state.

According to Akram, the bus driver, instead of slowing down at a traffic signial after the lights turned red, stepped on the accelerator so that he could quickly reach the other side and rammed into his son’s scooty. “The bus dragged the duo for several metres,” said Akram.

Members of his family and the neighbourhood were praying for Mauzzam’s survival outside the Trauma Centre. Doctors said they were trying their best to snatch life from the hands of death.

“Mauzzam is critically injured, with multiple injuries in his head and leg. We are constantly monitoring his situation, and doing our best to save him,’’ said Atul Aggarwal, neuro surgeon, Sushruta Trauma Centre.

The accident led to a riot-like situation in north Delhi’s Inder Lok, where 50-60 people from Mauzzam’s neighbourhood came out on the streets and started pelting stones at public transport buses.

Eight buses – five non ACs, one AC and two cluster buses were damaged by the mob. No one was injured in the stone-pelting. The driver of the bus that hit the teenagers has been arrested.
