A first-of-its kind smart tab-based election monitoring system has been introduced by Karnataka State Election Commission (KSEC) at 20 polling stations in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) wards at the Mahadevapura Assembly constituency.

The system, introduced on a pilot basis, was set up on Friday morning at 20 sensitive and hypersensitive polling booths, that were earlier identified by G Kumar Naik, BBMP Commissioner and District Election Officer. The tab with the video recording facility will allow election machinery to monitor the polling booths live on August 22.

Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Limited (Keonics) through Nichepro Technologies and Mukuti Technologies has jointly implemented the project.

The tab has been introduced with an objective to keep an eye on those indulging in election malpractice and also to closely monitor the movements of people.

Basavarajendra, Director Technical (Mahadevapura constituency) and a senior KAS officer deployed on poll duty, said: "The video can be watched via television screens, computers and even smart phones under a common cloud platform."

KSEC in its letter sent to BBMP Commissioner, Kumar Naik, on  August 20, stated that the system will not affect the poll process, secrecy of voting and will adhere to the norms prescribed for any polling station.

Pilot project
The letter also states that no payment will be made to any agency  as the project is executed on an experimental basis . "During elections in Haryana and Rajasthan and parliamentary elections in Diu and Daman, the smart tab-based election monitoring system was used based on the recommendations of the Election Commission of India.

Few days back, Keonics, the organisation that had executed the project approached us for the same. This is the first time tabs are being used to monitor elections in the State, " said PN Sreenivasachary, State Election Commissioner.
