Paraguayan tries to smuggle in Rs 20-cr cocaine

A Paraguayan flying in from Dubai was arrested as soon as he landed at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) here recently. He was reportedly trying to smuggle Rs 20 crore worth of cocaine into India.

The suspect, aged about 19 years, is said to have packed 3.347 kg of the banned substance in his check-in luggage. He had flown to Dubai from Brazil before taking a flight to Bengaluru.

He landed at KIA by an Emirates flight around 11 am on August 18. Those who gave him the contraband said he was to deliver it to a person in Bengaluru who would contact him, the suspect reportedly told the sleuths of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) who arrested him.

He claimed complete ignorance about that person or the purpose of procuring such a large quantity of the contraband, an NCB officer told Deccan Herald.

The NCB suspects that the substance was meant for peddling during late-night parties in and around Bengaluru.

The Paraguayan was produced before a local court which remanded him in judicial custody.
