Police detain protesting Congress, BJP workers

Last Updated 11 September 2015, 20:58 IST

Police detained hundreds of BJP and Congress workers who staged separate demonstrations near the Town Hall and the BBMP head office, defying ban orders, as the mayoral elections were in progress at the Palike head office on Friday.

Prohibitory orders within 500 metres had been imposed around the BBMP head office. Yet, hundreds of workers from the two parties staged protests. They were detained and sent to CAR Grounds in Adugodi. The BJP Yuva Morcha workers protested at the Town Hall against what they termed an unholy alliance between the Congress and the JD(S). Though they had planned to storm the BBMP head office, they did not go ahead with it. Congress workers staged a protest at the BBMP office main gate.

They claimed the BJP legislators and MPs had lost moral right to vote in mayoral elections as the party corporators had moved the High Court questioning the KMC Act that enables MLAs, MLCs and MPs to vote in mayoral elections.
