Design skills on display

The fourth edition of ‘Chrysalis’, a national-level fashion designing competition, was recently held at Army Institute of Fashion and Design (AIFD). This event is held every two years and sees students from institutes all over the country participating enthusiastically.

Presented by Central Mall, about 26 participants from 13 colleges all over India came forward for the event.

At ‘Chrysalis’, students designed, constructed and presented their garment in front of a jury.

They were given the fabric, theme and accessories only on the first day of the three-day competition.

Students had to produce design boards and illustrations, make the patterns and stitch, and embellish the garment from the material provided by AIFD. Dr KN Ninge Gowda, Registrar Evaluation of Bangalore University, was the chief guest at the inauguration.

He encouraged the students to do their best and spoke of fashion as being one of the enduring careers in the future.

A continuous evaluation on the lines of the ‘International World Skills Competition’ was also done. Jury members included eminent designers like Reshma Kunhi of the ready-to-wear brand, ‘Barcode’, Karthik Reddy, Prabhakar Dabral of ‘Jumping Goose’ and designers Divyashree and Soumya.

The grand finale was a fashion show of the finished products held at Central Mall, Sarjapur Road. The young jury included Meera Jayaraman, a design consultant, ‘Pinkk Palette’; and young upcoming actors, Rakesh Adiga, Chandan Vijay of the upcoming movie, “Mandya to Mumbai”, Apoorva Gowda and the Marketing Head of’ ‘Central’, Deepansh Bharagav.

Mamatha from Oxford College of Science took home the first prize of Rs 30,000. Sakshi Jain from National Institute of Fashion Technology, Bhubaneshwar won the second prize of Rs 25,000 and Rohit Rajput, who took home the third prize of Rs 20,000.
