Studying Abroad
Last Updated 21 October 2015, 18:30 IST

Dear Madam,

I am studying in I PUC (PCMB). I am keen on pursuing MBBS in a reputed university in the UK or USA. I have also taken extra courses for medical entrances. But I have no idea about applying to such universities.

Please suggest some universities and do tell me about scholarships given by the Indian government or organisations abroad.

Vedanth K

Dear Vedanth,

In the UK, your MBBS is a 5- year programme, where as in the USA, it is a minimum of 7 years. It is also cheaper to study in the UK. Your tuition fee could be anything between 9000 GBP to 16000 GBP per year and your living expenses could be between 5000 and 8000 GBP a year, depending on the city.

I suggest you register for and take the UKCAT and the IELTS. Application to the universities should be done ideally before October 15 of the year prior to which you intend to attend university. Scholarships are available for students with an excellent academic record. Apart from Cambridge and Oxford, Imperial College London, Lancaster, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield etc, are some of the leading institutions for Medicine.

Most scholarships offered by the Indian Government are for subjects other than Medicine. You could however apply for scholarships as an international student at the respective universities. For more information on universities, scholarships etc, please visit www.umaaswani.com

Dear Madam,

Greetings to you. I’m a third year civil engineering student from Bagalkot, Karnataka. I’m planning to opt for higher education abroad. Kindly suggest the exams I need to appear for to do so . Do I need to attend coaching classes for GRE and TOEFL? What books I need to refer to clear the examination. Also, please suggest some countries to where I should apply ?

Giridhar

Dear Giridhar,

Generally, you don’t need coaching for GRE and TOEFL. Go to the ETS website and work on the practice papers. That should be more than enough. If you wish to study in the US, you require GRE and TOEFL. For most other countries, it is sufficient to do an English test like IELTS / TOEFL /PTE.

Dear Madam,

I have completed a Bachelor’s in Engineering (BE. Hons) from BITS Pilani Goa  in Electronics & Instrumentation in the year 2013 with a grade point average of 8.53.

Post that, I have been working as an Test Automation Engineer at an IT startup in Bangalore for the past 2.5 years, which includes six months of internship. I have achieved tremendously in the job and have been bestowed with multiples awards.

I have also been promoted within a year. But, these are largely technical achievements. I don’t know how to take up more managerial roles and responsibilities, and I am not even sure what it means. I can relate to the business value of my achievements, but then again, I find it hard to quantify them.

While I do enjoy working in this field, I’d like to switch my career by pursuing an MBA in consultancy or finance in one of the top 20 colleges, preferably in the US. I took the GMAT and I have scored a 730 (96%ile, QA: 50(87%ile), VA: 37(81%ile), AWA:4, IR:8).

I haven’t been involved in anything outside work. I have recently begun volunteering for teaching underprivileged kids as part of an initiative taken up by my company. Although, I have been involved in sports here and there, but it is largely undocumented.

Can you advise me the steps I should take up in building a strong profile for top tier business schools?

Siddharth

Dear Siddharth,

You already have a strong profile; start putting together your resume listing out all your awards and achievements. Take the TOEFL-IBT exam. Write a good statement of purpose of 1000 words about career goals and subject choice and 500 words personal history essay about yourself and in what way you will contribute to a diverse student body.

Managerial roles would include being a team leader of a project that was carried out, any leadership award and any activity where you were involved in planning / organising/ supervising etc. For more information on how to get to a top business school, please visit www.umaaswani.com

Dear Madam,

I have finished my BE in Biotechnology with a CGPA of 8.55 from RV College of Engineering. I wish to do my MS abroad. Can you suggest some good universities which offer this course. I wish to study in Canada or the USA.

Aashrith J Kalale

Dear Aashrith,

In Canada, you could apply to Mc Gill, University of Toronto and University of British Columbia.

In the US, Columbia University, Stanford, University of Pennsylvania, University of California San Diego, John Hopkins, Purdue, Wisconsin Madison and UIUC are some of the best.
