Two men riding on a bike fled with Rs 20 lakh in cash after smashing the rear window of a land developer’s car near the Rajanukunte bus stand on Tuesday.

Ganagaraju, a land developer from Halenahalli in Madhure hobli of Doddaballapur taluk, withdrew the money from the Kaveri Grameena Bank. Then he and his father got into their chauffeur-driven car to return home.

On their way, Gangaraju asked the driver to pull in near a bakery for coffee. Just as the trio was having coffee, two unidentified men rode up a bike and attacked the car. They smashed its rear window, lifted the bag containing the cash and sped off. It was over in a few minutes.

Gangaraju and his driver raised an alarm and even tried to chase the duo but it was too late. They then went to the jurisdictional Rajanukunte police station and made a complaint.

Swinging into action, policemen went to the spot and checked the footage of CCTV cameras installed in the bank but found nothing suspicious. Police said they were trying to get the CCTV footage from buildings near the bakery.

Gangaraju had withdrawn a total of Rs 45 lakh from the bank. When he submitted the cash withdrawal challan, the bank staff gave him Rs 30 lakh and asked him to wait for a while for the remaining sum.

Sitting in the bank, he called up two of his employees, gave Rs 20 lakh to one and Rs five lakh to the other and sent them away. He kept the remaining Rs five lakh in his bag. After some time, the bank gave him the remaining Rs 15 lakh. He put all the cash — Rs 20 lakh — in the bag and headed for his car.

Police suspect someone known to Gangaraju had leaked the information to the robbers that he was carrying huge cash.
