Research has the capability to transform killer diseases like cancer into chronic, manageable ones. India, which is witnessing over 1,50,000 new breast cancer cases each year, needs to intensify its research efforts in order to address the growing needs of these patients, said Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, CMDR Biocon and Director, Narayana Health.

Speaking at the 2nd Brinker Awardee Breast Cancer Symposium - “CURES Cancer” here on Saturday, she said that a strong partnership between clinicians and scientists for translational research can lead to the development of safe, effective and affordable therapies for this life-threatening disease.

Shaw said US and Europe are able to raise funds for research to the tune of up to 20 million dollars a year alone. India too has the ability to raise funds, however, the need is for focused direction. Since, the challenge is made greater because of the sheer population, and thereby the number of people battling the disease.

Dr Devi Shetty, Director, Narayana Hrudayalaya, said that the aim of research is to give each patient the best possible journey with compassionate care. “Patients who participate in research live longer and help us answer pressing questions. Millions of patients have benefitted all around the world with cutting edge research, which ultimately finds its way into our clinics to be used as standard of care,” he added.

The initiative themed, Research CURES Cancer, is an attempt to debate, discuss and raise further awareness in the area of breast cancer, a disease that has been on the rise in Indian metros. Thirteen organisations from across the globe and India will gather to share their learning, study, research developments and other global advancements for breast cancer.
