60 days to make stadium disabled friendly

Last Updated 17 November 2015, 20:22 IST

Liquor bottles, syringes, cigarette butts, stagnated drains and garbage greeted State Commissioner for People with Disabilities K S Rajanna and his team during their inspection of the Kanteerava Outdoor Stadium in the City on Tuesday.

The officials were in for a shock when they saw the outdoor stadium in a shambles. They also found that both the indoor and outdoor stadiums are not disabled-friendly – there are no ramps, drinking water and other amenities. Further, overgrown weeds surrounded the stadium. Rajanna took M C Ramesh, Deputy Director of the department of Sports, to task and instructed the staff to take steps to make the place disabled-friendly within 60 days.

“Four days ago, I had issued a notice to the Kanteerava stadium authorities and informed them that we would be coming for an inspection. However, they still did not take steps to maintain hygiene and clean the premises. A lot of illegal activities are taking place here. We have given them the inspection proceedings with directions to be taken. A copy of the same has been given to Bengaluru Urban district in-charge Minister K J George,” Rajanna said.
