Man found dead inside borewell

A man died after falling into a 30-feet borewell dug by the Delhi Jal Board in outer Delhi’s Rohini in a suspected case of suicide on Tuesday, police said. Though the body has been retrieved, the man is yet to be identified.

According to police, the incident occurred at Vishraam Chowk at the intersection of Rohini Sector-4 and Sector-5. “The well was dug by DJB as part of a sewage project,” said a police officer.

The man fell into the well at 7.30 pm and was taken out at 10.45 pm. He was declared brought dead at Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital. “At least 50 people, including police, Delhi Fire Services and a team of Delhi Disaster Management Authority were employed to rescue the man. Unfortunately we could not save him,” the officer added.

The incident was captured by a CCTV camera installed at a nearby house. Police have analysed its footage to ascertain that the man deliberately fell into well. “It appears that the man willingly walked into the well,” the officer said.

The CCTV footage shows the man going towards the well, but it is not too clear. The investigating officers have approached technicians to help improve the quality of the footage. “Prima facie, we are treating the death as a case of suicide,” the officer added.

Locals told police that they had asked DJB to cover the well after work, but the board allegedly did not take note. “Whether a case of negligence will be registered against DJB or not is a matter of investigation,” the officer said.

The incident comes almost a week after a 23-year-old DJB pump operator allegedly suffocated to death after getting stuck inside a pipe while working at a sewage treatment plant in west Delhi's Keshavpur. Vinay Sirohi, a resident of Uttam Nagar, was employed as a contract worker with DJB.
