Thousands of devotees took part in Nagar Kirtan, a colourful procession which is held three days prior to Guru Nanak Jayanti, in the City on Sunday. The procession, which started at Gurudwara in Ulsoor, passed through MG Road and Shivajinagar before culminating at Ulsoor Gurudwara.
The holy book of Sikhs Adi Granth (First Scripture), more commonly called the Guru Granth Sahib, was taken in a decorated truck, as the devotees walked along singing hymns and performing the martial arts. The ‘five beloved souls’ clad in traditional attire led the procession. All along the procession, some people were engaged in sweeping a stretch of road on which the truck carrying holy book passed, a part of Sikh tradition.
Dr Harmindar Sigh, educationalist, said that there are 50,000 Sikhs in the City. At least 40,000 devotees are expected to visit the Gurudwara during the Gurpurab, which falls on November 25, he said.
