The Centre has decided to set up a National Accreditation Board for Telecom (NABT) to test telecom products and update the latest technology required for the telecom sector.

Setting up of such board is required for testing standards, methods and certifications by high level of expertise, an official in the telecom department told Deccan Herald.

Apart from the telecom sector, the board will also work towards the needs of the IT sector, he added.

The body will be autonomous one comprising telecom and IT experts.

The organisation will test imported telecom equipment and update the technology as per the requirement of the industry, the official said.

Once the NABT starts functioning, the government will do away with the current  testing labs that are under the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories for telecom products in the Department of Science & Technology.

The new centre will work in ordination with Telecom Centres of Excellence and Centre for Development of Telematics for certifications and assessment.
