Last Updated 28 November 2015, 19:09 IST

Mayor B N Manjunatha Reddy on Friday warned the public of hefty fines if they failed to segregate garbage.

Speaking after launching mobile display vans to create awareness on garbage segregation, he said, people should segregate wet and dry waste at source if the problem of waste had to be solved.

“The mobile display vehicles will travel to each of the eight Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) zones from Friday to create awareness on waste segregation,” he said.

Briefing about the drive, the mayor said that the campaign will be held for a month and in the first phase, at least 10 vehicles equipped with loud speakers and staff to distribute pamphlets, will cover the south zone. The zone (South) has 44 wards  it would be covered within a week.

Strict action will be taken against those who fail to segregate waste despite this campaign, the mayor said.

The waste processing units are not accepting mixed garbage and hence people should start segregating waste at source, the Mayor Manjunatha Reddy added.
