For those who crave simplicity in this convoluted world, ‘Caprese’ is the place to visit. As Oscar Wilde once said, ‘I’m a man of simple tastes.

I’m always satisfied with the best’, this Mediterranean restaurant in the newly-opened Shangri-La hotel is the incarnation of the two cousins — simplicity and perfection. They go hand-in-hand when it comes to this eatery.

Minimalist finishes and monochrome patterns create the perfect dining experience. And when I mention finishes, it isn’t restricted to the decor; even the presentation of the food is something to behold. Not overdone, ‘Caprese’ seems to spend more time on the taste than look. But that’s not to say they don’t serve well — whipped up with panache, each dish comes out on a stone platter and in light-coloured bowls and plates.

The executive chef, Antonio Tardi, and the skilled culinary team deliver Spanish tapas, Middle-Eastern mezze platters and Italian dishes, all of which emphasise on engaging the diners. The culinary journey begins with the amuse-bouche and ends after a round of desserts.

For starters, head towards their selection of bruschetta, which includes the ‘Homemade bruschetta salmon’. The salmon, topped with fish eggs and asparagus, leaves the freshest Mediterranean taste on your tongue. Subtle and simple, there are bruschettas with anchovies and ham and fig toppings.

Do not (emphasis here) skip the cheese platter! Go for a selection of three cheeses — brie, provolone and burrata (the first and third are likely to get your attention quickly). ‘Caprese’ has some signature beverages as well, including a ‘Sangria’ and ‘Negroni’, but they aren’t going to make you go ‘wow’. For the first time, water was my preferred drink for the night.

When it comes to soups, their ‘Pumpkin’ and ‘Seafood’ soups take the spotlight. The bowl comes empty except for a helping of cheese, and the soup is poured in front of you. This is something special to ‘Caprese’ — even their ‘Tiramisu espresso’ is made in front of the diner. The ladyfinger, mascarpone, chocolate and espresso shot are added in front of you.
Their ravioli, risotto and pasta are must-tries for the main course. With a stunning view of Bengaluru from the 18th floor, this is the place to relax in and have a quiet meal.

‘Caprese’ is located on the 18th floor, Shangri-La, Vasanthnagar. Guests can step in any day for lunch from 12 pm to 3 pm or for dinner from 6.30 pm to 11.30 pm.
