Sanjay Dutt to be free

Last Updated 08 December 2015, 19:29 IST

Actor Sanjay Dutt, who is serving prison term at Pune’s Yerwada Jail for illegal possession of an AK-47 assault rifle which was part of the consignment that landed ahead of the 1993 serial blasts, is expected to be a free man as early as March 2016.

However, Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Prof Ram Shinde said that the government has no information on this.

“The government has not received any proposal for pardon of his tenure,” he said.
Reports said that Dutt is expected to be released by March 7 after putting together remissions because of his good behaviour, leaves and balance furlough and parole.

He has been convicted in the March 12, 1993 serial blasts case – for possessing an AK-47 rifle, which he later destroyed.

The rifle was part of the consignment that landed ahead of the serial blasts – and it was given to him by gangster Abu Salem.

Justice P D Kode, the then special judge of TADA court, convicted him and awarded a six years imprisonment.

The Supreme Court had upheld his conviction, but reduced the sentence by one year – making his jail term to five years.
