Salman breaks down after judgment; fans cheer

As Bombay High court puts an end to actor's 13-year-long wait, festivities break out in Mumbai

Actor Salman Khan broke down in the Bombay High Court on Thursday when it acquitted him of all charges in the 13-year-old accident case.

His fans danced, burst firecrackers and distributed sweets. Dressed in a black-white check shirt and blue denim, the actor, who was standing near the box, was seen wiping tears, as Justice A R Joshi pronounced the verdict acquitting him, inside the jam-packed courtroom.

His sister Alvira, who was present on almost all days of the hearing and his secretary Reshma too were seen hugging each other, and were emotional. When the court rose for the day at 11 am, Justice Joshi asked the accused to be produced and subsequently his lawyer Amit Desai spoke to him and then informed that he would be there by 1:30 to 2 pm. By that time, Khan has already started from a studio in Karjat. He reached the court by 1:32 pm and by 1:40 pm, the judge arrived to dictate the operative part.

More than 200 lawyers and court staff and litigants entered the courtroom, to have a glimpse of the actor. “Put you cellphones in pockets,” said public prosecutor Poornima Kantharia, when some people tried to click photos inside the courtroom.

When the proceedings ended around 2 pm, Salman was seated inside the court to carry out personal bond formalities, there was a huge crowd outside to see the actor. The actor finally came out of the court at around 4:55 pm, and was escorted to his car by his bodyguard Shera and his relatives.

At about 6 pm, he reached his Galaxy Apartments residence in Bandra, where there was a huge gathering of fans. They were there with posters hailing him, they burst crackers and distributed sweets. The Galaxy Apartments too was decked up.
