Noted writer and former vice-chancellor of University of Mysore D Javare Gowda (De Ja Gow) expressed displeasure over Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) authorities for not working for Kannada language here on Monday.

After inaugurating a seven-day workshop on ‘Kannada Language Literature-Classical Igloo’ organised by CIIL and Centre of Excellence for Studies in Classical Kannada at CIIL, he said the CIIL is constituted to work for conservation and development of Indian languages. “If the authorities fail to concentrate on development activities, it is iniquity and injustice,” he warned.

Remembering the struggle to get ‘Classical’ status for Kannada, he said various people have striven hard for this. But, the CIIL is not working in an effective manner. It has failed to work for Kannada language. Due to its negligence, Rs 2 crore, which was earmarked by the Central government, was returned. This shows the inefficiency of CIIL authorities,” he said.

Kannada language has developed a lot and CIIL and the Central government should concentrate more on it. Primary education in regional language must be made compulsory across the country. CIIL Director Awadesh Kumar Mishra should write a letter to the Centre, urging it to amened the Constitution, De Ja Gow said.

Folk scholar D K Rajendra, In-charge Planning Officer M Balakumar and Programme Convener N K Lolakshi were present.
