'Making singles more gratifying'

Last Updated 16 December 2015, 14:47 IST

Actor-singer Ayushmann Khurrana feels making music singles is more gratifying than composing film songs as it has more freedom.

The 31-year-old actor has lent his voice to many popular songs like ‘Pani Da Rang’ from ‘Vicky Donor’ and ‘Saadi Galli Aaja’ from Nautanki Saala’.

“Singles have a purity, there is a clarity of thought. In movies, you get a brief of the situation and then you make a song, in singles you already have a situation and then you compose. “So I think its more gratifying as an artiste, even for the composer, the director or for anybody. Singles give you more freedom,” says Khurrana.

He was speaking at the launch of his new single by Bhushan Kumar ‘Yahin Hoon Main’. The song has been co-composed by Rochak Kohli and directed by Amit Roy.

The ‘Hawaizaada’ actor said he does not insist on singing his own songs as he believes an actor should be different from a singer.

“I am not that selfish. In fact, the director of ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ had asked
me to sing but I refused because I was playing a Kumar Sanu fan in the film and I couldn’t have sung it.

“The character of Prem Prakash Tiwari (in the film) wouldn’t look good singing in his own voice. I believe the actor should be different from the singer. And that was a deliberate effort.” Khurrana shot through fame with the hit song ‘Pani Da Rang’ and feels the number became

extremely popular because it had the backing of a film.
“‘Pani Da Rang’ had the weight of the film with it. Vicky Donor played a huge role in making it what it is today... When a song goes with the narrative, chances of it getting accepted by the audience are higher.”

Bhushan Kumar of T-Series said he will be coming up with more singles featuring Bollywood celebrities like Sonakshi Sinha, Sooraj Pancholi and Jacqueline Fernandez.

“Next (single) is coming with a newcomer Gurinder from London. That we are shooting on Sooraj Pancholi and Jacqueline. We are launching Sonakahi Sinha’s
as well, which she has sung,” he said.
