Two tuskers have been killed in H D Kote taluk of Mysore district on Friday.

Sources said, one tusker died after it accidentally came in contact with the electrified fence near Sogahalli village. On Thursday night, three elephants strayed into the sugarcane field near the village. On spotting pachyderms, the villagers raised alarm and chased them.

In the morning, villagers found the elephant’s body lying in the field belonging to Giddashetty and Muttushetty. It is learnt that the field had been given on contract to a Tamilian, who had reportedly electrified the fence to protect crops from the attacks of wild animals.

Assistant Conservator of Forests Thammaiah, Range Forest Officer Pramod visited the spot and lodged a complaint at the Beechanahalli Police Station. Veterinarian Venkataramanappa conducted the postmortem.

In another incident, an young elephant has died at Gundreshed in the backwaters of Kabini in Gundre Forest Range. Forest officials suspected that farmers might have fired at the jumbo, which raided the agricultural field on Karnataka-Kerala border, in order to save their standing crops.

Forester of Gundre Range Rudramuni visited the spot. A case of unnatural death has been registered.

The postmortem will be held on Saturday to know the exact cause for the jumbo’s death.
