'Writers should analyse farmer suicides'

Hampi University former VC H C Boralingaiah, on Friday, asked the writers to analyse farmers suicide through their works.

After inaugurating a two-day national workshop on ‘Sahithya – Sahithi – Varthamana’, organised by Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) at Cauvery Auditorium, here, he said, the farmers are committing suicide due to various problems. Besides writeups in newspapers, no writer has made an attempt to analyse their problems, through writing. “No novels or poems related to farmer suicides have come up recently,” he lamented.

Stating that the farmers should not take the extreme step, he urged the writers to come out with solutions for the situations leading to suicides. The State government is neglecting libraries. The authorities have not purchased books from the past three years, he said.

He urged the Kannada Book Authority (KBA) to put pressure on the government to purchase books and also asked the authority to publish more books. The local bodies like city municipal corporations are not utilising the cess amount in a proper manner to buy books, he alleged. KSOU Vice Chancellor M G Krishnan, and Kendra Sahitya Academy former secretary Agrahara Krishnamurthy were present.
