A 40-year-old electrical contractor, who had gone missing from Delhi, was shot dead by his employee in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district.

Tapan Kumar was allegedly having an affair with the accused’s wife, police said on Saturday.

Umesh Kumar, 21, and his wife lived on rent in a house owned by Tapan in east Delhi’s Shakarpur. Tapan hailed from Shillong in Meghalaya.

The probe was initiated after Tapan’s missing person complaint was reported with Subhash Place police station in northwest Delhi on December 19.

“Umesh had seen Tapan in a compromising position with his wife in October. Since then, Tapan had been threatening to kill Umesh if he revealed the incident to police. Umesh was under pressure as he had also taken some loan from Tapan,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.

Due to non-identification, the body was cremated as unclaimed by Mathura police after preserving it for 72 hours. Tapan’s ATM card has been recovered from Umesh.

On December 19, Tapan’s brother-in-law Anuj Dev, a resident of east Delhi’s Shastri Nagar, had reported that he was missing since December 13.

During inquiry, police learnt that a body of an unknown male aged about 40 was reported in Mathura’s Chhata police station on December 13. “There was a gunshot injury on his neck,” Yadav added.

A case of murder was registered, but local police failed to establish the victim’s identity.
Delhi Police contacted Uttar Pradesh Police to share the details available.

Some photographs of the body were shown to Tapan’s brother-in-law Anuj, who then identified the body.

The needle of suspicion pointed towards Umesh as he was absconding since the second week of December.

On December 24, police were informed that Umesh had killed Tapan on Akbarpur-Sherpur Road in Mathura.

The investigating team found out that he would come to meet someone at Shakurpur. A trap was laid and Umesh was apprehended with Tapan’s ATM card.

On sustained interrogation, Umesh confessed to have killed Tapan.
