Official gets one year jail for seeking bribe

The Udupi District and Sessions Court recently sentenced Ajekar/-Marne Nadakacheri Revenue Inspector Trivikrama Adiga to one year of imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 for demanding bribe.

Adiga had sought a bribe of Rs 2,000 for himself and Rs 1,000 for Village Accountant from Chandrashekhar Nayak of Karkala taluk towards transfer of a land document. Nayak had filed a complaint with Udupi Lokayukta on March 5, 2015 against Adiga. Udupi Lokayukta Police Sub Inspector B P Dinesh Kumar had trapped the accused while receiving the bribe and produced him before the court. A chargesheet was filed at the District and Sessions Court against the revenue inspector.

On December 30, the District and Sessions Judge Shivashankar B Amarannanavar sentenced Adiga to one year imprisonment and imposed a fine for Rs 5,000, under Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. If the accused fails to pay the fine, he will have to undergo an additional one month of simple imprisonment. The punishments would run concurrently, he said.
