A 17-year-old girl tried to commit suicide after her lover refused to marry her. The 21-year-old youth has now been arrested for allegedly raping the girl on the pretext of marriage.

The arrest was made after locals approached senior police officers. They alleged that local police had initially refused to take action against the accused.

The girl lives with her elder brother in outer Delhi’s Sultanpuri. According to police, she was a in a relationship with a neighbour named Aakash for the past few months.

“It is alleged that the accused developed physical relation promising marriage,” said a police officer. On January 5, the girl told Aakash that she was pregnant. She requested that they must get married, but Aakash allegedly refused to inform his family.

In her statement, the girl told police that she threatened to commit suicide. But it had no effect on Aakash. The girl apparently consumed some poisonous substance on January 8.

“She was found unconscious when her brother returned home in the evening,” the officer added. Her brother informed police and rushed her to Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital.

The girl regained consciousness at the hospital. She narrated her ordeal to her brother and her statement was also recorded by police.

Locals, however, allege that police did not take any action against Aakash. “The policemen were acting in favour of Aakash and tried to force the girl for settlement,” Manish, a local told Deccan Herald.

The girl’s brother sells vegetables on a hand cart in Sultanpuri. Locals decided to approach politicians and senior police officers on noticing the helplessness of the siblings.

Aakash was arrested on Sunday after an FIR was registered.
