Blue Star on Monday said that talks are on with Indian Institute of Technology Madras, for manufacturing air-conditioners that operate on solar energy.
B Thiagarajan, executive director of Blue Star, said that the company will also establish new plants in Andhra Pradesh and in Jammu with an investment of Rs 150 crore.
“The total production capacity of the two plants will be five lakh room ACs per annum and the production centres will also manufacture freezers and water coolers,” he said.
The company is expected to make solar power ACs in a time frame of 18 months, Thiagarajan said.
He added that the details of the investment will be disclosed only after the board meeting that will be held on January 29.

Hinting that the Centre might increase the excise duty on the room ACs in the coming budget, he said, even if the Centre hikes the duty, it will not reflect on the customers.
