Youth Red Cross units in colleges

The Academic Council of Mangalore University has approved the proposal mooted by the district nodal officer for the Indian Red Cross on the introduction of Youth Red Cross units in colleges affiliated to the university.

The student members of the Youth Red Cross unit will get credits for their participation in the Red Cross activities from the next academic year.

The nodal officer had requested the university to consider the participation of students under Youth Red Cross unit under extracurricular activities.

Circular to colleges

The Under Secretary to the government, Education Department, had issued a circular to colleges on December 22, 2011 to open Youth Red Cross units. Accordingly, each college has to pay a fee of Rs 1,500 to Indian Red Cross.

A student, who becomes a member of the Youth Red Cross Club, has to pay an annual fee of Rs 50 through the college. Of the total annual fee collected by the colleges, 30 per cent will be sent to Indian Red Cross Society in Bengaluru.

Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor K Byrappa said that credits will be given to the students from 2016-17.
