Couple hang selves in room as 4-yr-old son plays outside

A couple hanged themselves at their house in Byatarayanapura police limits on Mysuru Road on Friday night due to financial problems.

The deceased have been identified as Harish, 32, and Jyothi, 28, residents of Ranganatha Colony. Harish, a cab driver, had married Jyothi around six years ago. Jyothi was a homemaker. The couple have a four-year-old son Vikrant.

According to the police, Harish had mounting debts which he could not repay. The couple were under pressure for the past few months with creditors knocking on their door and calling them on the phone demanding immediate repayment. The couple probably decided to end their lives due to financial problems, the police said.

The incident is said to have taken place around 6.30 pm, but it came to light around 9 pm. Vikrant was playing outside the house when the couple hanged themselves from a ceiling fan in the room.

They had locked the room from inside, but had not locked the door of the house, the police said.

A few neighbours spotted Vikrant playing near the house till late in the night and grew suspicious. One of them went into the house to alert Jyothi, but the room was locked.
When they got no response after repeated knocks, neighbours broke open the door and found the couple hanging from the ceiling fan. They immediately alerted the police, who rushed to the spot and moved the bodies to Victoria Hospital, police said.

Some of them called up Jyothi’s mother who lives in Mandya. “There is no room for suspicion and the two hanged themselves from the same fan. The couple did not leave behind any death note,” said a police officer.

Jyothi’s mother, in her complaint, said Harish had taken to drinking and the couple would often fight over trivial issues.
