Lieutenant Colonel S Sandhya, who  was deputed by the Army to pursue her Diploma in Neuro Sciences at Nimhans, won two awards for topping her batch.

Lt Col Sandhya who was posted at the Kolkata Command Hospital, relocated with her family to Bengaluru to complete the course. At an event organised to observe the 42nd Institution Day of Nimhans on Monday, she was presented the Infosys Foundation and Mukund Memorial awards for scoring the highest marks. Another candidate from the army, Captain Aparna N R from Lucknow, was also given an award for the highest score in Diploma in Psychiatry.

Other awardees were Joby Jose and V R Prabhu Das. They took part in research on encephalitis in Bihar. “It was a great learning experience as we will not get to see so many patients at the same time,” said Das.

Dr B N Gangadhar, director, Nimhans, said a foundation had been laid for the 125-bed super-speciality block and a waiting area at the casualty ward was designed for patients’ attenders.

He also said its lab was recognised by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL). “This is the first time a government hospital’s lab was given the accreditation,” said Dr Gangadhar.

The director also said that over 700 research papers were submitted in the last one year. On the occasion, Senapathy Gopalakrishnan, co-founder, Infosys said there was a need for improving research in the field of mental health.
