A local court sentenced a 29-year-old man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl.

The 50th Additional Sessions Court Judge Shuba Goudar found Manjunath guilty of the offence and convicted him. He directed the convict to pay Rs 30,000 as compensation to the victim and also awarded two years additional simple imprisonment if he failed to pay the fine.

Manjunath was accused of raping an 8-year-old girl in 2012 in Mico Layout. M N Varada pleaded for the victim.

Manjunath, a native of Sakleshpur in Hassan district, was employed as a cab driver. He was staying with a woman named Pushpa in the neighbourhood. The victim would often visit Manjunath’s house as she knew both of them. She had gone to his house to watch a television programme on July 7, 2012, when Manjunath gagged her and raped her while Pushpa was sleeping inside a room. He let her go as Pushpa came out of the room after sometime, said the police.

The victim returned home and narrated the incident to her parents. A medical examination on Manjunath proved he had indeed committed the rape and the police arrested him based on a complaint.

Jail for drunk-driving
A City court awarded two days imprisonment to an autorickshaw driver for indulging in drunk-driving for the second time. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 3,000 on Suresh.
The police stopped him recently on RT Nagar and subjected him to an alcometer test and found that he was heavily drunk. The police checked his driving licence and found that he had indulged in a similar offence two weeks ago. They registered a case and sent him to court.
