Aptharakshaka

Science versus faith. While the debate is not carrying steam these days, “Aptharakshaka” strikes a blow to the rationalists, with Captain (Vishnuvardhan) putting his money on God’s power to prevail over the evil forces. To refresh the memory, Captain is a psychiatrist who is summoned by Ramachandra Acharya (Avinash) to assist him in getting rid of the notorious Nagavalli, who has now shifted base to Mysore and is channelising her serpentine spirit to maximum effect.

“Aptharakshaka” being Vishnuvardhan’s 200th, and last, film, everyone associated with the film tries to grab some screenspace with him in the introduction song. But director Vasu’s script rescues the audience and the “Sahasa Simha” from a film that could have descended into one of another eulogy. For a change, the story unwraps nicely, essential in a film that is neither horror, nor a thriller. The narration is engaging without crowding the viewers’ mind.

Vasu also cleverly sprinkles his hero’s personal beliefs into the proceedings, throwing enough hints of the actor’s immortality to his fans. Gurukiran’s music is good, but not exceptional. PKH Dass’ cinematography is good. But art director Venugopal stands tall, along with the costume designers and  the special effects guys, translating the story into a veritable treat. The old stronghold featured in the second half stands out, so does the attention paid to details in costume design.

It is painful to see a handsome superstar in the twilight of his life, especially when “Aptharakshaka” is his last one. Still Vishnuvardhan’s mature performance minus histrionics serves as a reminder of what is lost forever. Except for Bhavana and Ramesh Bhat, the casting is bang on. The bevy of beauties - Vimala Raman, Lakshmi Gopalswamy and Sandhya- together provide perfect support to Vishnu.

This story could have been evolved into a perfect series. If only Vishnu was alive!
